Interconnected Factors

The Northern Triangle and Mexico have long been ravaged by civil war and poverty, as of 2015 El Salvador holds the record for the murder capital of the world, making it the deadliest country to live in outside of a war zone(hngn.com). This rampant violence and poverty are the root causes of adolescents and children fleeing for the safety of the U.S, however a plethora of other reasons can be attributed to this crisis that are often overshadowed by the more dominant causes.

The right to development as stated by the U.N General Assembly “is an inalienable human right by virtue of which every human person and all peoples are entitled to participate in, contribute to, and enjoy economic, social, cultural and political development, in which all human rights and fundamental freedoms can be fully realized.”(un.org). The sheer act of living in these countries breaks the right to development, with children growing up with little to no opportunities the only things they will ever know are gangs, violence and poverty. The femicide and gender based violence has continued to rise unabated throughout Central America, where the lack of laws protecting women and children from harm or the inability of the government to enforce these laws leaves women and children especially vulnerable in these unstable countries. The danger facing women comes not only in the form of gangs but in domestic violence that encompasses child abuse as well, leading to the normalization of violence, where “fewer than 3% of reported femicide cases are resolved by the courts”(UCHastings.edu). The disproportionate amount of gender based violence, domestic violence and child abuse can be traced back to the strong and perversive patriarchal system that pervades throughout Central America.

The emotional cause of it all can be pinned to the longing to reunite with their families, a large percentage of which has immigrated to the United States, where one or both of the parents was forced to leave behind their child in hopes of finding a job that can sustain them in their country of origin. The lack of legal immigration options leaves refugees little choice ,coupled with ever increasing intertwined factors, refugee children and adolescents embark on their perilous journey in the hopes of finding a land where they are safe from persecution.
